Senticaudata is one of the six of the crustacean order Amphipoda (the group of scuds or sideswimmers). It includes some 6000 species, which is more than 50% of the currently recognized amphipod biodiversity.Horton, T. et al. World Amphipoda Database Introduction (read 23 April 2025)
Senticaudata was split off from the traditional suborder Gammaridea by James K. Lowry and Alan A. Myers in 2013, as a part of a process of reorganising the higher taxonomy of amphipods. Senticaudata contains much of the world freshwater amphipod diversity, though the majority of its species are marine. It is currently subdivided into the six infraorders Bogidiellida, Carangoliopsida, Corophiida, Gammarida, Hadziida, and Talitrida.
