The Story of Enigma: The story of the Enigma began in the 1920s when German military began using the machine, developed for the business market, to communicate in unintelligible coded messages. It worked by allowing its operator to type a message and then scramble it. During WWII, the Nazis believed its secret codes for radio messages were indecipherable to the Allies so they used the machine for battlefield, naval and diplomatic communications. It was during the 1940 Norwegian campaign that the painstaking work of code breakers cracked the code. Their work began to pay off in 1941 when they were able to gather evidence of planned invasions of Greece. This is the story of how the meticulous work of code breakers based at Britain s Bletchley Park cracked the secrets of German wartime communication and played a crucial role in the final defeat of Germany.
