It is an ethnographic reflection of intense field work in Yauri and the surrounding areas that border it, as well as many trips to archives, libraries, and interview sites. It is also the result of discussions with colleagues, especially Salamone's mentor, Charles Frantz, who directed Salamone to Nigeria and who has aided the author's many years of study of the Hausa over time. Frantz's work on ethnicity, as well as ethics in anthropology, has served to provide a standard for Salamone's own endeavors. This work looks at the notion of identity formation and its relationship to history, religion, warfare, gender, economics and various other dimensions of Hausa life, as well as minority group relationships and creolization.
