Book is very good starting point for ASIC backend engineers - with good and short introduction and than right on to the target. However there is no substitute for practice so after reading the book , my advice is to jump start to some simple to medium complex projects.
This is a good intro - like the title says these are the essentials. This is a great overview of methodology, but the real secrets to success in physical design are knowing how to write and debug scripts, especially perl, unix, c-shell.
