AN EXPLANATION OF THE LATIN PREFIXES, OR PREPOSITIONS WHICH ARE USED IN THE COMPOSITION OF ENGLISH WORDS. 1. Prefixes are those words which are joined on the left, or at the beginning of words; as, undo. Those which are joined on the right, or at the end of words, are called Affixes; as, faithful. The former of these are usually called prepositions; but the term prefix is more definite. 2. The LATIN PREPOSITIONS are, a, ab or abs, ad, ante, circum, con for cum, contra, de, di, dis, e or ex, extra, in, inter, intro, ob, per, post, pro;, prefer, pro, re, retro, se, sub, subter, super, and trans. 3. A, Ab, or Ads, signifies from; as, to avert, to distract, &c. that is, to turn from, to take from. 4. Obs. Vert, verse, and version, are different modifications of the Latin veib virtere, to turn: hence, avert, is to turn from; averse, turned from i and aversion, the act of turning from, or the state of being turned from. 5. Ad signifies to or at; as, to adjoin, that is, to join to; to advert, to turn to. 6. Obs. Ad and its contraction a, and its diversified forms at, to, have preeisely the same meaning. T. 06s. An becomes ac, af, ag, al, an, ap, or, as, or at, according as it may be more easily pronounced in connexion with the word to which it is prefixed; as cede, from the Latin cedere, to yield, comes accede, to yield to. s. Al, besides being one of the forms of ad, is also an Arabic word, signifying the; thus, Koran signifies book; but Al-Korun, or Aleoran, means the book, which holds the same rank with the Mahometans, as the Bible does with the Christians. 9. Ante signifies before: thus, antedate, is to date before; antediluvian signifies before the Deluge, so called from ante, before, and diluvium, corrupted into Deluge: Ante-meridiem means, befor...
