A new spin on the familiar, as the Concerto Koln have again incorporated new perspectives on preexisting ideas into Bachs compendium of Baroque orchestral literature. To that end, here, as with their recording of the orchestral suites, the ensemble chose the low tuning pitch of a1 = 392 Hz for their recording of the Brandenburg Concertos. As to the Fiauti dEcho called for in No. 4, a newly constructed double flute possibly known to Bach is the answer. Another particularity is in the use of differing and specific modern replica harpsichords as well as use of the violone.
After being confronted with the extreme pace of the BWV 1046, I thought that Concerto Köln might be trying to squeeze all six on to one CD. Alas, they fell just short at 88 minutes. This puts them well outside the mainstream of both traditional and HIP practitioners: compare, for instance, to Savall (98 minutes), Egarr (96 minutes), Gardiner (92 minutes), Chailly (94 minutes), Pinnock (94 minutes) and Harnoncourt (105 minutes).The album has its moments.
