We have an outdoor fishpond and have had problems with raccoons through the years. We can successfully trap them but now that animal control will no longer pick them up, we had to come up with a different solution. I have the neighbor's cats that use the area under my master bedroom window for their own personal litter box.. It drives me crazy! After a year I have the audible high-pitched sound on mine too and it now makes the device too noisy to operate. I think it has to do with a moisture problems in the unit that occurs after being outdoors in the elements. I looked inside the unit and aside from rust on the battery plates, nothing seems visually degraded. It would be really nice if I could order parts to repair the unit (I'm a techie though).
