After a year I have the audible high-pitched sound on mine too and it now makes the device too noisy to operate. I think it has to do with a moisture problems in the unit that occurs after being outdoors in the elements. I looked inside the unit and aside from rust on the battery plates, nothing seems visually degraded. It would be really nice if I could order parts to repair the unit (I'm a techie though).
