EU-only three CD set. Miles Davis gave two concerts at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in 1960 as part of a Jazz at the Philharmonic package, one on April 9 and the other on October 15. On the first, his quintet showcased John Coltrane, who had reticently agreed to join Miles for the gig and left the group shortly after. For that reason, he was replaced on the October performance by Sonny Stitt. Both concerts (in excellent sound quality) are presented here in their entirety, along with a second concert given by the group with Coltrane on April 9 in Scheveningen. As a bonus, we have added a quartet set by Coltrane with Miles' rhythm section recorded in Dusseldorf during that same tour (Miles didn't play on this filmed session because he wanted more money than what was available for the project).
This is a great set from an historical perspective, but I am unsure of the 'pedigree' of this Green Corner label's release since there is no evidence that these were licensed from Verve, which was the label sponsoring the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts at the time. That issue aside, the sound quality is decent and the music will delight any Miles Davis fan. I have always liked Davis live and the line-up is predictable on most of the track..
