i heard In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet before this one, so when I put this one in my car CD player, I was surprised. Maybe 3-4 days of looping it later (like i do with most of my CDs before switching to something else), I decided it was just a little too weird for me. It's not very rockin', for lack of a better word, it's more like how I felt when i heard Jeff Buckley or Radiohead's songs for the first time. It was ok but I didn't like it nearly..
This was my experiment to find a new progressive rock band and was very pleased with this Porcupine Tree release. It is not progressive in the same way as Yes, Genesis or Rush, but have enough elements to make this some great music. It strikes a good mix of guitars and keyboards and creative lyrics. Some instrumentals are a bit too thin and atmospheric, but "Signify" and "Idiot Prayer" are powerful and driving... and can lead to driving a little ..
