At the time of the free form revolution in the late '50s there was something reassuring about the music of Eric Dolphy. It was as if he was there to remind the establishment that the links with old styles had merely been stretched, certainly not broken. Dolphy's Candid titles come from his golden era. He was certainly playing superbly in '60 and '61 when this album was recorded, and, if one was to select the 1964 Out To Lunch with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Anthony Wiliams as his finest date as a leader, it would be confirming the tremendous ground work that was put in during these years. Personnel includes Abbey Lincoln, Charles Mingus, Ted Curson, Kenny Dorham, Jo Jones and Dannie Richmond.
