The 3 lighting modes (100% light, 50% light and Defensive Strobe) are controlled by the rear glow-in-the-dark button. The button uses both hard and soft touch technology to cycle through the light settings. Much like the button, the JAG has a hard and soft looking exterior. Upon first glance the JAG has a very smooth bezel, yet when used for self-defense the spring-loaded PROTEC Shield retracts, exposing the mean, aggressive self-defense face. The bezel is smooth to the touch and the aggressive face only protracts upon impact.
Retract the shield and the scalloped edge is fairly sharp, too sharp to just be exposed in a pocket or purse. A clever design. The light intensity plus 3 settings of 210, 105 and strobe is good for the price. The 210 setting lights up a large area. The spring loaded bezel has a threaded retainer ring that came off for my wife in fact releasing the spring and permanently exposing the jagged edge within 30 days of purchase.
