Though 8 of the 11 songs here were released on 7-inch singles over the past year, the full effect hits home on this soundtrack collection. The diverse group of acts--ranging from Am Rep staples such as the Cows, Hammerhead, and Boss Hog to underground weirdos like Guv'ner and Strapping Fieldhands and even major-label stars like the Melvins and Mudhoney--each offer their own insights into the world of sex and, specifically, porn. Halo of Kittens throws out a rather slopped-together opener called "I Hate Porn," but the Melvins counter with a slick "I Like Porn," which sounds like it belongs in the soundtrack to a porn flick. Most of the rest of the material is split evenly between weird, often disturbing sexual imagery and fairly obvious statements for or against porn. I have no idea what Mudhoney's "Goat Cheese" is about, but along with Hammerhead's "Camaro" and Boss Hog's "Black Throat," it's one of the highlights here. Guv'ner's lo-fi "Coitus City" with its Pavement-like guitar noodling directly contrasts with Big Chief's dull, over-produced "Ludist Nudist," but part of this soundtrack's charm is its strange variety of bands and styles. Screwed is a great purchase whether you get a chance to see the movie or not simply for the sociological value of hearing such distinctive bands discus what's always a touchy subject. Oh, yeah, the music is summarily great, too. --Adem Tepedelen
