During the first half of the nineteenth century Neukomm was one of Europe's most highly regarded composers. He was the highly favored prot ªg ªe of the French diplomat Talleyrand and established contacts with the high nobility. With a mind of his own, his originality is demonstrated in his 4 orchestral fantasies, which he termed an- Essay in a New Genre.
Sigismund Neukomm, at one point ennobled to become Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm, was born in 1778 and became a pupil of Michael Haydn and sometime associate Franz Joseph Haydn. He apparently was prolific at composition, and though he lived into the late 1850s the four orchestral works of his on this disc are pretty much in the style of the late Classical period. The two Grand Fantasies each last thirteen and a half minutes, and both are pleasant but quite unmemorab..
