FINAL UPDATE (8/15/15): You can read the saga below, but this is the final chapter. The machine wouldn't work one morning. The pump sounded like it was straining and only a trickle of water/espresso appeared. Took it to Saeco experts : "Clog somewhere in plumbing; cost to fix (including new pump) is $275".
