In 1999, Jarrett turns to the work of two masters, Gershwin and Ellington, for The Melody at Night, With You. He opens the album with Gershwin's I Loves You, Porgy, perhaps one of the most covered jazz tunes today. Still, he puts his stamp on the song, playing it with the gentility that belongs to a classical sonata. Indeed, most of the songs here get a similarly docile, though not sappy, treatment.
