The Tunisian folk music presented in this album was collected in 1977 by Aisha Ali with the assistance and guidance of Salah AI Mahdi, the noted ethnomusicologist who was at that time Director of the Ministry of Culture in Tunis. The collection focuses on traditional dance music interspersed with a selection of folk songs. Except for the Hadara songs which are accompanied by violin and tar, the dance pieces are played on either the mizwid, a goat skin bagpipe; or the zukra, a folk oboe; as well as bendir, a frame drum ; tabl, a large two headed drum resembling the Turkish davoul; and darabukka, a goblet shaped clay drum.
