Easy to read in low light or completely dark areas * Download frequencies from your computer to your radio scanner with optional software and patch cable * Clones with another PRO-164, 20-164 handheld or with the desktop version, PRO-163, 20-163 * Now includes bar graph signal-strength meter he RadioShack(tm) PRO-164 scanner, built by GRE of Japan, is essentially the GRECOM PSR-300 in a different skin. This model is a straightforward trunking scanner with a standard number of channels and banks. If you're in an area with trunking (EDACS(tm) or Motorola) and no or limited digital, this is a great choice for a handheld scanner. The PRO-164 stores up to 1,000 frequencies. You can program alpha tags along with the frequencies and sub-audible tone codes so you'll know exactly whom you're listening to. Alpha-tag programming is best entered with software. See ARC300 on this site for your software options. Also hear storm reports before they are broadcast on TV or radio. These reports are provided by trained in-the-field storm spotters in your area. Signal Stalker II will jump to the nearest transmitting frequency in your area.
Can't complain. Does everything I need for a scanner withouth digital trunking. I bought an antenna to go with it, I think most people who buy this have the same idea in mind, but the combo is great for aviation bands, which is mainly how I use it. Good range, long battery life, easy to use, once you get the hang of it. Not overly large for what it can deliver.
Compare the online manuals of the PRO-164 and the Uniden BC125AT. This is about the best way to compare the differences between the 2 scanners. Having first owned the 125, I found it difficult to program and was not able to download from Uniden the software needed to program it. The instructions are at best vague. I returned the 125 for the 164 and do not regret the decision. So much easier to use and on average $20 cheaper.
I bought this scanner for my Aunt and Uncle as a thank you for letting us stay at their house. It has had good reception and works very well for them. They listen to the NHP, sheriffs and fire services. The trunking feature works well and allows you to follow conversations on a trunked radio system. However, it is not easy to program. The trunking system has to be programmed at the beginning of each bank, starting at 0 for the first bank. This threw me off at first as I was used to memory 1 starting the firs..
