It's Friday night in Bayonne, New Jersey, circa 1987, and Debby's come to pick up Beth for a night on the town. Beth gives her ten-year-old daughter a kiss good-bye, then she and Debby are off to Oliver's, their favorite local bar. On the way, Beth takes over the driving so that Debby can change into something more appropriate, i.e., tight. As she works her way into her ensemble, Debby recounts an unsettling incident that happened to her at work that day: she suffered an onset of hysterical blindness and was rushed to the emergency room, where she miraculously recovered. As the women pull into Oliver's parking lot and make last minute make-up adjustments, Debby gets defensive about Beth's opinion that Debby's blindness was caused by stress. Things don't just bother me, Debby says Things happen to me. What happens to Debby this particular night is that she meets a man named Rick, a contractor who owns his own house and has Patrick Swayze eyes. Debby hasn't been very lucky with men in the past. And just moments ago she told Beth that her new plan is to take her time with the next guy she dates. Rick seems like a decent guy, but is Debby really seeing things clearly? As Debby tries to parlay a casual fling into possible marriage with an indifferent Rick, her mother Virginia (Gena Rowlands) wonders if her affair with widower Nick (Ben Gazarra) is the real thing. Rounding out the romantic possibilities is Bobby, the bartender who flirts with Beth.
