One of the founding members of that band, Gaye Adegbalola, steps out with her first solo album, Bitter Sweet Blues. The album pairs the singer up with the producing and slide-guitar-playing talents of Rory Block, another great woman of the blues. The partnership's success comes across clearly on the opening track, She Just Wants To Dance. Out of this, a sweet and low version of Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl places the singer beside a piano, as smoke trails from a butt in an ashtray on top of the instrument. The funkiest and funniest tune on the album, Big Ovaries, Baby stands as the singer's calling card; her self-portrait; an image you'll admire time and again.
