While there are better overviews of Cajun music available, there is still great historical value in this set from Folklyric Records. Cajun Breakdown focuses on the 1930s, an era when the fiddle was beginning to overshadow the button accordion as the premier instrument of the region. While there are some fine examples of the 1930s Louisiana style, not all is directly Cajun, with some songs clearly coming from the popular southeastern country music. Another big influence was southwestern string bands and The Hackberry Ramblers with fiddler Luderin Darbone are the prime exponents on this recording. Other fiddlers represented include Leo Soileau, Clifford Breaux, J.B. Fuselier, and Hector Dubon. --Louis Gibson
