TurboTax Basic is Sufficient, December 20, 2011

I have used Turbotax for over 10 years. Have always used the basic as it is the most economical, and contains all the features I need, including forms for rental properties, depreciation schedules, and more. The information from the previous year is transferred to the current year with the touch of a button, which can possibly keep you from forgetting something. Turbotax is great!

The Turbo Tax basic edition seems to provide ample tools even for complex tax return preparation.It's main shortcoming: A trifle clumsy to use at times, particularly when one wishes to go directly to the IRS forms being worked on.

I've been using Turbo Tax for years. Every year, there seems to be some little "glitch" that Turbo Tax always blames on the government, saying a required update from the IRS hasn't been received, etc. Until now, the glitch has been resolved within a few days or a week. But this time, we imported the exact information from last year's return. Nothing at all has changed. First our return was rejected because the AGI/PIN didn't match, though Turbo Tax claims that it imports all of the info from previous returns for you so you don't have this issue. So we created a new PIN, triple-checked the AGI and submitted it again. Then it said the spouse SS# was wrong. It's not. We even called the SS office and verified it is correct. Then it said one of our of our dependents have already filed using their SS#. That's interesting since none of our children are old enough to even have a clue how to do something like that. So, we've paid for Turbo Tax and end up having to file a paper...
