No, this is not Wasting Light. I'm glad it isn't because it shouldn't be.

Upon first listen, my first thought on every track was "wow this is different, thank God." As much as I love Foo Fighters, I have been growing tired of the homogenous rut they have been in since One by One. While there have been a few songs that have been exceptions to that, over all it felt like Dave just hit auto-pilot for the last few albums and called it a day.

Enter Sonic Highways.

I have been a huge fan of this bands early material (everything before There is Nothing Left to Lose) since 1997, and this is the first time since The Colour and the Shape came out where I feel like Foo Fighters put out an entire album that has genuine inspiration behind it. This album feels real.

Those of you looking for the predictable 3-minute-long Foo Fighters single that you've grown accustomed to, keep looking. You won't find it on Sonic Highways.

   I love Foo Fighters and love Dave Grohl. I think they are one of the last great rock bands left and they put on a hell of a live show with tons of sign along anthems. I have to admit I was not expecting a ton out of this album when we started to get word of the concept. 8 songs recorded in 8 cities with lyrics that are made up of quotes from musicians that Dave interviewed in that city.I sort of got what I expected. It has great music although a little safe. The lyrics are just OK. What is missing is the mood. FF songs usually have a lot of angst, anger, frustration, whatever you want to call it that most of us can relate to. FF songs have big choruses that make you want to sing along. None of this is plentiful on this release. It isn't missing, just not plentiful.I keep wondering if I had HBO and was watching the documentary of the same name - Sonic Highways - that I might have a finer appreciation for the songs themselves.
