I will take what I can get, June 14, 2013

Forward
I will take what I can get at this point from The Brand New Heavies. N'Dea Davenport is only on three of the tracks. She rocks on "Sunlight" and "Addicted" like she used to do back in the day. Alone they make the CD. BNH with N'Dea 4ever! Some other chick is singing lead vocals on many of the other tracks. What is her name? Who is she? I DON'T CARE. Her voice is not N'Dea's. I suspect the ageing Miss Davenport is making yet another solo attempt beyond BNH. Ugh, I think the sista needs to face the fact that she has fared best with BNH.This CD overall seems a tad bit stuck in the '90s when acid jazz with house flava was really happening. I do like some of the rock elements heard on several of the tracks. Audio tune is also being used here and there. Might that be to just be current? Sounds like the group just released whatever to satisfy the record company. Concept project this ain't. Message project this ain't. "Whatever" would have served best as the title of the well intended...

linear, endless songs, boring, non inspired compositions, Ndea in IN or OUT?..., what has happened?. I assume that the band has suffered problems in the recording of this cd. There is no other explanation...

The Brand New Heavies return with an album full of the usual fusion of jazz, funk, soul, r'n'b and pop. Great melodies and catchy tunes mixed in with some brilliant instrumental tracks.New vocalist Dawn Joseph is a welcome addition and provides some excellent input, and ofcourse N'dea Davenport is back to bring some "Sunlight" to proceedings with the awesome first single that is set to be my summer anthem. All of this takes you back to their biggest and brightest moments on their first three albums. If you loved Brother Sister and Shelter then this will definitely get your juices flowing!!!
