Total junk for $50!, January 7, 2011

FAO Schwarz Band in a Drum
I saw this at Toy's R Us and thought it was a really beautiful toy, but I hesitated to buy it because it was $50. Lo and behold, my husband's mom got it for our son for Christmas. The toy looks really beautiful, but it's actually really junky. The drum is pressed wood, and was already cracked all the way around the inside lip when we opened it. The "xylaphone" is a joke; it's 4 tiny keys and not good for much. The recorder is really difficult to play, even for an adult, you have to blow so hard to make it make any sound at all. Impossible for a toddler. One maraca cracked last night, and my kids have not been the least rough with it. We are taking it back to Toys R Us ASAP, especially after reading the above review on lead. I returned my Melissa and Doug Band in a Box that I had bought, but now I think I will get that instead. It's $30 cheaper and the instruments are a lot better. What a disappointment.

I purchased this drum set for my toddler and when I went to wrap it I noticed a label on the bottom of the box stating that it may contain lead and could create lead dust. It is made in China. After that discovery, I returned it and the Toys R Us employee was surprised when I showed him the label but not really concerned. I was dismayed Toys R Us would sell a toy with lead. I was expecting better quality since it was FAO Schwarz brand and it was $40. I wanted something made of wood. Instead I went to Target and bought the B. Parum Pum Pum Drum which is made in the USA, BPA free and only $20.

I bought this product for my daughter and had been holding off on giving it to her because I didn't know enough about the safety of FAO Schwartz products. I am SO GLAD I didn't just pull open the box and give it to her. Tucked away on the bottom, in small type on a little sticker, it says "WARNING: CONTAINS LEAD. MAY BE HARMFUL IF EATEN OR CHEWED. MAY GENERATE DUST CONTAINING LEAD." ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!? In this day and age, a company like FAO Schwartz manufactures and puts their name on a toy for kids THAT THEY KNOW CONTAINS LEAD (lead is a developmental toxin for children, scientifically documented to interfere with vital brain development in kids) and a store like Toys R Us sells it?! Disgusted at what companies will do these days to make a buck while putting our kids health, safety and well-being at risk. Disgusted.
