I was apprehensive about purchasing Netgear consumer products. I've been in the IT/ISP/Telecom carrier game for about 15 years and I've had poor experiences with Netgear experience, consistently. I read the sterling reviews and decided to give it another try; it was ~$50, so it was a gamble I was willing to take for a managed gigabit switch. This experience reminded me why I don't gamble.
The first unit worked fine for my LAN at home, for about a week. Then I started to experience periodic, massive packet loss on the LAN (~85-90%), then the issue would disappear as mysteriously as it began. With each occurrence, I would remove elements from the network to rule them out, and probe multiple endpoints to try to track it down. Eventually I was able to conclusively determine that the cause was the GS108E; the issue never occurred again with it removed from the equation (I'm now using an Engenius 8-port managed PoE switch in its place, without any issue;...Read more
I have three of these switches in service in a very heavy internet traffic household. Multiple PCs, laptops, smartphones, consoles, media and game streaming boxes, etc running at once. I bought these instead of the trendnet I reviewed previously, as the trendnet stripped some important features from their 8 port switch; namely wall mounting holes and different lights indicating 100 or 1000 mbps connections. This netgear switch has both features, and a lifetime warranty to boot. For those reasons, along with the fact that it was currently on sale, I decided to invest in them.Performance has been flawless for anything connected to them. No stuttering, freezes or disconnects. There's really not much else to say regarding performance. It's been perfect for the year I've had them.Regarding the capacitor issue mentioned in a previous review, you need not worry. These switches no longer use capacitors, or at least the ones that were the problem area in previous...Read more if (typeof amznJQ != "undefined") { amznJQ.onReady('jQuery', function() { amznJQ.available('popover', function() { var widgetDom = jQuery("#RY204OACBQ84B_imageSection_C11089D0-F1F9-11E6-B2AF-4E7CD8DCE39A"); var images = widgetDom.find(".review-image-thumbnail"); for (var c=0;c

DO NOT UPGRADE TO 1.4.0.2 IF YOU NEED GIGABIT PORTS. 1.3.0.3 is the latest stable version. Port 1 is capped at 100Mbps and fails connectivity tests after upgrading the firmware to 1.4.0.2. I had to downgrade the firmware to resolve the issue. I spoke with support and it is a known issue but the firmware is still available on the website.
