Very simple - no springs of any kind - just a simple wood handle, folding blade and locking mechanism. Because it uses a lot less metal parts than most knives it is also very lightweight - which is kind of nice. It came useably sharp out of the box but was easy to get a much better sharpness with my Ken Onion knife sharpener. I can't comment on how good the blade holds its sharpness over time but the fact they use german steel bodes well. If you are debating between the locking and the non-locking version of this knife - get the locking. Unlike the non-locking american/german/swiss folding knives that have a spring mechanism to hold the blade in the open position - making it hard for it to fold down onto your fingers while using the knife - the MAM knives have no such thing. They would be a recipe for finger amputation.
