Well, I was hoping for a classic Def Leppard record in the likes of Hysteria or Pyromania, but instead what I got was a refreshing surprise. For the most part the band relies less on the glossy production process they used for their earlier records, so many of the songs have a harder grittier sound kind of like the song Undefeated. Where they really stand out on this album is in the songwriting. They really write some great lyrics that can often be positive, uplifting, tough, cool, and maybe even a little funny here and there. They're actually quite good at it still, as Def Leppard is one of the top touring attractions today, and they are still younger (or as young as) the Stones, U2, Aerosmith, Rush, KISS, ACDC, the list goes on. Being older does not disqualify a band from making a quality product.3. They have NOT gone "soft." While Def Leppard did have a string of ballads in the mid to late 90's. "Retro Active" and "Slang" were two of their hardest rocking efforts, as was their 2006 covers album, "Yeah." So while...Read more
