The band just keeps getting better. Exit longtime fan favorite Josh Kramer on vocals and enter completely unknown Brian Phyll Miller. The band doesn't miss a beat and still sounds quintessentially Saint even with a new sound on the mic. To replace Josh Kramer and not miss a beat is an incredible feat as Kramer left some might big shoes to fill. Miller sounds terrific on this release. His mid-range powerful vocals, combined with occasional falsettos to the sky, are perfect for Saint. Beyond the vocals we have a band that sounds as hungry as they ever have. The rhythm section of Richard Lynch on bass and Jared Knowland on drums are tight and potent, providing a pummeling bottom end that undergirds each and every song on this record. Jerry Johnson, while always providing a solid performance, has never equaled the chrisma that Dee Harrington brought to the band...until now. This album is Jerry's coming-out party. Saint returns ... and with new singer Brian Phyll Miller. It's a significant change since Josh Kramer had been at the vocal helm since the beginning and gave the band their patented Judas Priest sound. We heard hints of Miller on Desperate Night, but he is in full possession of the vocal reins on Broad Is The Gate - perhaps the band's best release since their seminal releases in the 80's. Hell Blade (2010) and Desperate Night (2012) - also both great releases - marked a return to more of the traditional 80's classic metal sound and boasted a marked improvement in production/recording quality. Apparently, those accomplishments paved the way for this new release as there is no doubt this is the best "sounding" Saint recording to date. One could certainly argue these tunes sound better than the new Judas Priest which suffers badly from over compression and poor mixing.But the big question, really?
