Brian Jonestown Massacre singer Anton Newcombe has been a busy guy in 2015 – first he released a mostly instrumental full-length soundtrack to a nonexistent French film, then a collaborative album with singer/songwriter Tess Parks, and now this seven song mini-album recorded at his Berlin studio in 2014 and ’15. A lot of artists can’t maintain that kind of pace without sacrificing quality, but Anton has put out some of his best stuff during periods of hyper-productivity, and sure enough I don’t detect any signs that he’s rushing his process to keep up with himself. After the inexplicable weirdness of bjm's last release, this is a powerful return to form.the music falls somewhere between the 60s reverb sound of bravery rep and noise, and Anton and co.'s more shoegaze recent releases, every song is strong and a welcome addition to the bjm Canon, with the exception of dust,a rocky Erickson tune. While he is a worthy artist for Anton to cover, that song is a bit meandering and a misfire, however I still give this release a five because the rest of the release is beyond strong with hilights being the title track get some, and leave it alone. Few artists have retained their relevance and cool factor into their late forties as well as bjm,and I look forward to their future releases with enthusiasm.
