Ok, about a year ago I purchased the current model of this of the time, the Powerslide 3650. That scanner has been trucking along fine ever since I bought it and put it to use in my scanning business. Over 10,000 scans later and it hasn't skipped a beat. It's time now to expand to allow increased volume, so I went looking for another. To my surprise, the 3650 was no longer available and in it's place I found the PS5000. Why not I figured, can't go wrong with something that can scan at 5000dpi instead of 3600.

I've since received this scanner and I have to say bravo. Not only is this quieter than my 3650, it also as mentioned, gives me the flexibility of going up to 5000dpi for my customers.

The only thing that I was dubious about in deciding to purchase this is the fact that it no longer supports Kodak digital ICE, and that was quite a concern for me. Given that I don't use the Cyberview software anymore (honestly it's not very good when compared to...Read more

UPDATE Oct. 2012 - It's the good and the great!OK - this unit does an outstanding job of scanning 35mm slides after all. I have now scanned about 1,000 slides, and the results are stunning. My wife and I are now enjoying these old memories on a high definition TV screen.I've experienced slide feed errors of only about 1 in 1,000. Much different that my original experience. As other another reviewer noted, to make this unit work successfully you need to plan to spend many hours of trial and error effort. Furthermore, at least two additional purchases are needed - VueScan Professional software and a Paximat Model 100S slide carousel. The slide trays that came with the PowerSlide 5000 (and the free tray included with my purchase) just don't work for cardboard-mounted slides. I purchased two Paximat 100S carousels so that I could load 100 slides while 100 were being processed. I also purchased a Paximat Model 100 (no "S" prefix) which has wider slots. I did this in...Read more

I bought this Pacific Images scanner several months ago and used it to scan my entire collection of 35,000 slides. I ran this scanner 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for many months and didn't have any problems and am very satisfied with it. This scanner is a real workhorse and performs like a trooper, and I heartily recommend it. In fact, I can't recommend it highly enough and I'm a pretty discerning photographer. This is the fourth slide scanner I've owned, including two Minolta Dimages in the early 2000's and a Plustek 7600, which I bought a few months ago. All my other slide scanners take only four slides at a time and are manually fed. This Pacific Images scanner handles 100 slides automatically when used with an optional round tray. Regarding image quality, the scans are very good; far superior to the Dimages but a shade below the Plustek, which has 7,200 dpi.Transparencies (i.e., slides) are much more difficult to scan accurately than photos or...Read more
